a question for Camera manufacturers

Postby manarak » 15 May 2011, 11:49 •  [Post 1]

I am always irritated with picture file naming.

Why on earth can't they give more alternatives to their rather stupid file naming format?

I'd like something like this:
YYYYMMDD_numbering

YYYY = year
MM = month
DD = day

another great addition could be a custom prefix for people who own several cameras

Umm on my Nikon D90, I never take the card out of the camera unless I have to.

I use the USB cable to import. It automatically imports to a folder which is named the date like 2011-05-15 for today.

It may exist with your 550D too.

I always take the card out and stick it in a card reader, it is so much faster than transferring the pix through USB.

yes, the software that comes with the 550D can also rename files and make folders automatically, but I feel the camera should have the flexibility to name the files the way the user wants.

Ah true. Interesting bit about the card reader, my USB card reader was slower than the USB cord to the camera. Maybe Nikon is cheating and using USB 3.0. :D

Olympus have a slightly more sensible approach. e.g P7260014.jpg would be the 14th shot, taken on 26th August. However....... the prefixes PC, PB, and PA would denote December, November and October respectively, e.g PB050537.jpg would be the 537th shot taken on 5th November. Confused?............... you will be!
