picture file format

Postby Cockateer » 06 Aug 2011, 19:44 •  [Post 1]

Hello,

I'm new to this board, so I apologize in advance if this has been asked or discussed before (I just couldn't find a topic related to this): When I visit a picture thread and want to save the pictures they're all named "file.png". And indeed the file format is PNG which means it takes ages until a thread is completely loaded, because PNG files are much bigger compared to JPG. When I check a picture's properties I learn that the file has an alternative name, for example "blabla.jpg".

I just opened a thread that contains three pictures (20.3 MB all in all). With my slow DSL connection (384 kBit/sec) it took some 10 minutes until the thread was complete. I wonder why PNG is used here instead of JPG, and I doubt that it makes sense. I cannot judge yet if this is "the best LB forum", but what I can say is that this way it's by far the slowest. Yes, my bandwidth is low, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's not happy with this.

Thank you.

Well, before only thumbnails would be shown in the thread and one would have to click on the pic to see it full size.
This was made to save bandwidth.

Members complained about this, so I set the pictures to appear full size in good quality(slow).

Regarding the format used, I have trouble making high quality JPG pictures on the fly without quality problems.
It is a weird issue, I hope to solve it soon.

The issue is there, BUT: I am curious which thread containing only 3 pictures is 20MB heavy? The pix are resized automatically and should not weigh more than about 200k to 1MB per pic at most.
Please point me to that thread?

Hi Manarak, thank you for your prompt replies. I'll try later, don't have much time tonight. But here's the thread I was referring to: Freelancers from Beach Road. Post #1 contains two pictures, one has 6.8 MB, the other one 7.2. And the 2nd post has one picture, 6.3 MB.

Later!

BTW, as for file format conversion on the fly, try IrfanView's Batch Conversion feature, I think that should do the job, even lossless.

That file was uploaded without resizing so it really is that big.

I see where the problem is.
I will build automatic resizing into the file serving function.

OK, I have worked on the problem, found a solution and implemented it.
The pictures are now generated on the fly in different sizes depending from where they are called.

There should be a substantial improvement in speed.
