Poll on photo presentation

Postby Admin » 04 Feb 2011, 00:48 •  [Post 1]

There have been some debates about the forum's method of displaying pictures.
I'd like to know members' opinions on this.

Thank you

I much prefer the format used on the more established forums, such as LB-69, etc.

Also, the maximum file size is rather restrictive.

To be honest, I was going to post alot more photos, however I can't be bothered re-sizing and don't like the way they display.

Similarly, I'm not a fan of the watemarking / protection methods being used.

Whilst I appreciate it may be better than the original version trialled on this forum, I think its all unnecassary.

Cheers

Paul, the pictures open to almost the maximum size allowed by your screen.
The bigger your screen, the bigger the pic will show.

The watermarking won't go.
But I can change the way the pics display and the resizing.

Just a question about "I can't be bothered re-sizing"
Do you post pictures straight out of the camera? they must be about 3 to 9 MB each depending on your cam?

KK if you don't resize it'll kill your upload speeds because that is much slower than download speeds. Also people don't generally want full size images anyways since they're too big for their monitor and it takes forever for pics to load especially with a mediocre connection.

700 x 500 is a good compromise size which is perfect for most laptops/ ipads and good enough to seen 2 side by side on a normal monitor. Generally it is best to change the image resolution DPI from 300dpi (which is print size) to 72dpi (web format). That itself reduces the file size from 6mb to like 700kb or so if not less.

Very easily done if you own photoshop.. click an action and BAM done. Lightroom has it even easier and there are plenty of resizers out there so honestly it makes life easier for you too.

I prefer at least 1024x768 resolution on pictures as long as they are not embedded in the posts. In the posts there should be largish thumbnails, maybe 70x50 where the user can click the images they want to see.

Hi Guys,

Just to clarify my comments regarding re-sizing.

I had already re-sized my photos for use on other forums & sending to friends privately, however I was finding that I had to re-size again to ensure the file size was small enough to upload on this forum.

Cheers

tell what... I will up the uploadable file size to 1MB per file and I will then add some code which will resize the file automatically to something more civil like 150k or something.
That should do the trick.
Just wait some weeks for me to do it, because I got a lot of stuff on my hands now.
Probably in march...

I've temporarily upped the file size to 512k that should be more than enough.

KK, resized photos should be around 200k each. If yours are bigger than that, I'd suggest to lower the quality a tad.
(the upload limit was 256k before I upped it)

PassPort, if you use Safari, please have pity of me and install firefox.

Safari is not garbage, but the safari developer guys always managed to screw something up in their implementation of web standards that caused one or several of sites to malfunction while firefox, internet explorer an chrome were fine.

edit:
...wait, I can go and check myself what you use... what did I code a surveillance system for ??

Well, it records everything a webserver can record about your actions on this site.
When you open a thread, how much times, when you view an attachment, etc. along with the classical IP info.
I won't go into details on how it works, because this would also be explaining how to circumvent the system.
It basically makes it easy for me to link a Username to a picture download or thread view with precise dates, times, etc.

I am the only person who can access that data.

There is no logging of content, i.e. written or received private messages.

Yes, you are right.
This is a strange error in Google Chrome remaining to be solved.

Weird one tap in chrome usually opens it for me. Just felt like trying the site under chrome and works fine although I can't get used to chrome.

Well I must admit I do prefer the full size pic for initial maximum impact - resizing to 1024x768 works well enough for most monitor/browser combinations.

The site seems to be much smoother in the new firefox 4.

Pictures are resizing pretty quickly to the maximum allowed under the screen resolution you have and I haven't required taps on the picture viewer like I do under google chrome.

Strangely enough the FF4 layout seems "borrowed" from chrome and while its taken me a while to adjust to the new FF4 since I was used to FF3 but I can say it is definitely faster than it was.

Does it compare to chrome? Well beauty is the in eye of the beholder so up to you!
