I have a True InterSim card - 365 day period, international roaming, plus I can phone UK for 1B a minute. I don't use the mobile very often but it works out much cheaper than my old landline.

that's an interesting and often overlooked question.

SIM cards have a validity in Thailand, and when it's expired you can't make calls anymore.

I didn't care at the beginning what brand I bought, but 1-2 call seems to be better, because validity days can be transferred between customers.

I just bought a top-up of 100 baht for DTAC and only got 7 days extension. :-(

True Move can be had in many places and be topped up at a minimum of 50B for the year.

yes I think so... if I can recharge for one year with 50 baht instead of the SIM card expiring annoyingly, true move seems the best.

The cheap 1B a min calls work quite well also - not as good as my old landline but then I think mobiles aren't too clever in that respect.

Malakor have you found a way to reduce the cost of international calls from your true move that is cheaper than 00600 + country code + area code + number?

I was being stupid and ff showed me yesterday that instead of paying 3b per text (I had no idea it was that high). I could go to the website and sign up for 150 texts for 75b by entering a promotion code and texting and automated acceptance number. Quite a bargain. If only I had read that before I sent 25 text messages or so lol but that is the way it goes.

Thank you malakor and ff for recommending TM. I like it so far.

I've been using the same sim card for the past three or four years.

It's a 1,2 Call sim card, and it works out OK.

A few trips ago, I managed to get someone at MBK centre to alter the plan, so I didn't have to spend as much to keep it active between visits.

To me, that's the biggest issue, not the actual cost of calls or SMS messages.

I suppose if I lived in Thailand I'd have a slightly different perspective, but I'm more interested in keeping my current number active so all my friends (and ladyboys sometimes) can contact me when I'm in town.

Cheers

ok, i changed for that truemove SIM.

Be warned, truemove and the others don't use the same tower network.

In my room, I have AIS and DTAC service, but no truemove :-(

So I'll be foced to dump truemove again and take something else

truemove still seems to work fine for me but I've made a mistake with my phone.. the battery or the phone keeps dying and I keep missing calls.. not good.. had a look at a Nokia N8 (fake for 1700 baht).. hmm..

any suggestions of what phone to use.. I know.. I know.. real iphone is the da bomb but I'll use that later when I'm living here full time.. not now. For now a fake will do if it can do phone calls.. texting and occasionally some GPS.. sigh.. fake iphones don't do that. :(

I'll do that next time.. in the mean time another battery seems to have fixed the problem and a $60 fake iphone works fine.

I want to get a real phone next time around.. one that is way better for texting than this one although this is a major improvement over what I had before. I'll have to do some research as to what phones are the best for texting.. I think blackberry is good but they feel weird in my hand.. too wide.

look at the Samsung B7610.
But 13000 baht!

best option is probably to go to tukcom and ask for older phones with slider-keyboard
